When repayments are supposed to start
You do not begin repaying the moment you leave university. Repayments become due from the 6 April after you finish or leave your course, and even then only if you earn above your plan's threshold.
If your employer started taking deductions before that April, they were taken too early, and they are reclaimable.
How to check
- Note the date you finished or left your course.
- Work out the first 6 April after that date. That is your earliest correct start date.
- Check your payslips: were any student loan deductions taken before that April?
- If so, those early deductions can be refunded.
How to claim, free
For a clear case you can claim this yourself at no cost. Request a refund in your online student loan account, or contact the SLC, with your payslips and course end date to hand. Refunds are usually paid within about 28 days.
If the SLC disputes your course end date or delays
This is the one where the dispute tends to be about a date rather than a number, so your completion or award letter does the heavy lifting. Put the dates and figures in writing, with an escalation route ready.
Over-Deduction Refund Request
Sets out your course end date, the deductions taken before it, and your figure, then asks for the account corrected and the money refunded. £15.
The other three refund reasons are in the refund hub. If the SLC has already refused, see how to complain to the SLC.

Frequently asked questions
When are student loan repayments supposed to start?
From the 6 April after you finish or leave your course, and only then if you earn above your plan's threshold. You do not begin repaying the moment you leave university, which is the assumption that causes this error.
Why would deductions start before that?
Usually payroll. If you start a job in your final year, or shortly after leaving, payroll can switch student loan deductions on before the correct start date. It is easy to miss because the deduction looks completely normal on the payslip.
Can I get early deductions refunded?
Yes. Deductions taken before your correct repayment start date are one of the four official refund reasons, and they can be reclaimed in full.
How do I work out my correct start date?
Take the date you finished or left your course, then find the first 6 April after that date. That is the earliest your repayments could correctly have started. Anything deducted before it is reclaimable.
What if the SLC disputes my course end date?
That is the usual sticking point, so evidence matters. Your course completion or award letter, or confirmation from the university, establishes the date. Put it in writing with the payslips showing the early deductions alongside it.
