The Student Loans Company refunds significant sums to borrowers every year. The catch is that refunds are not always automatic, and most people never check. Run through the four reasons below. If any of them sound like you, follow the linked guide.
The four official refund reasons
1. You earned below the threshold
Your total income in a past tax year was below your plan's threshold, but repayments were still taken.
2. You were on the wrong plan
Your employer used the wrong repayment plan, so money was taken from a lower threshold than it should have been.
3. You started repaying too early
Deductions were taken before the April after you finished or left your course.
4. You paid after clearing the loan
Payroll kept deducting for a few weeks after your balance had already reached zero.

How refunds work, the honest version
For a clear-cut overpayment, you can claim a refund yourself, for free. Sign in to your online student loan repayment account and use the request a refund option, or contact the SLC. Refunds are usually paid within about 28 days. Have your payslips, P60 and customer reference number to hand.
That is the whole process. If your case is straightforward, you do not need us, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something you will not use.
When it is not simple
The free route works right up until it does not. If the SLC refuses, disputes your figure, drags well past 28 days, or the money has gone missing entirely, what changes the outcome is a firm written request that sets out your figures and evidence, with a clear escalation route behind it.
When the free route stalls
If the SLC refuses, disputes your figure or drags past 28 days, a firm written request with your evidence and a clear escalation route is what moves it. £15.

Frequently asked questions
How do I claim a student loan refund?
For a clear-cut overpayment you can claim it yourself, free. Sign in to your online student loan repayment account and use the request a refund option, or contact the Student Loans Company directly. Have your payslips, P60 and customer reference number ready. Refunds are usually paid within about 28 days.
Are student loan refunds automatic?
Not reliably. The SLC will sometimes refund an overpayment without being asked, particularly where a balance has been cleared, but a great many overpayments sit unclaimed because nobody checked. Treat it as something you have to ask for.
Can I get back extra repayments I chose to make?
No. Only accidental overpayments can be refunded. Voluntary extra repayments you chose to make are not refundable, which is one of the strongest reasons to think carefully before overpaying a loan that may be written off anyway.
How long does a student loan refund take?
Usually around 28 days once the claim is accepted. If it drags well past that, or the SLC disputes your figures, that is the point at which a formal written request and a clear escalation route start to matter.
Do I need to pay someone to get a refund?
For a straightforward case, no, and anyone suggesting otherwise is selling you something you do not need. The free route is your online account or a phone call. Paid templates are for the cases where that route has already failed you.
