Why now

Parliament has called the system broken. Nobody is checking the accounts.

On 7 July 2026 the House of Commons Treasury Committee published a report titled Student loans: Broken and unfair? It concluded that the way Plan 2 loans were promoted amounted to mis-selling, and said the Government has a moral obligation to reverse the freezing of the Plan 2 repayment threshold at £29,385 from April 2027.

Here is what that report does not do. It does not cancel anyone's loan. It does not create a compensation scheme. As of today, no redress scheme exists, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something they cannot deliver.

What you can do is check whether your own account is actually correct. Wrong plans, over-deductions, uncredited payments and missed write-offs are individual, provable errors with established complaint routes. That is where we come in.

The errors worth checking for

Six ways a student loan account goes wrong.

Wrong repayment plan

Plan 1, Plan 2, Plan 4, Plan 5 and Postgraduate loans all deduct at different thresholds. If payroll or SLC has you on the wrong plan, money comes out that should not.

Deductions below the threshold

Repayments are only due above your plan's income threshold. Irregular pay, second jobs and payroll errors can trigger deductions in months you earned too little.

Double deductions

PAYE and Self Assessment can both collect in the same year. Without a check, the same loan gets paid twice and nobody tells you.

Payments not credited

Money leaves your payslip but takes months to reach your loan account, or never shows at all. The gap is your money, sitting in the wrong place.

Deductions after the loan ends

Loans are written off after a set term, and cleared loans should stop collecting immediately. Deductions that continue past either point are recoverable.

Balance and interest errors

Unexplained balance jumps, interest at the wrong rate, or interest on figures that were wrong to start with. If you cannot reconcile it, it needs checking.

The template letters

Seven template letters, one for each way an account goes wrong.

  • Records and Subject Access Request. Get the full account evidence before you complain.
  • Over-deduction refund request. For money taken that should never have been.
  • Wrong repayment plan complaint. Get the plan corrected and the difference back.
  • Advanced Learner Loan write-off request. For a loan that should already have gone.
  • Missing repayment credit complaint. For money that left your pay but never arrived.
  • University course mis-selling complaint. For a course that was not what you were promised.
  • Escalation pack. Independent Assessor, then your MP to the Ombudsman.
See the template letters

Same approach as our parking templates. You stay in control, you send the letters, and every legal reference is checked against the real source before it ships. They go on sale at launch, and the people on our list hear the moment they do.

Before you do anything else

  • Do not stop your student loan deductions. They are collected under statute, and stopping them is not a challenge, it is arrears.
  • We sell self-help template letters and guides. We do not cancel loans, guarantee refunds, provide legal advice, or act on your behalf.
  • There is no student loan compensation scheme. If that changes, the people on our list hear about it first.
